What is SwitchWaker?

SwitchWaker is a native port of the GameCube version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to Nintendo Switch hardware. The v0.4.2 project README describes compiling the decompiled game with the Aurora renderer. It is an independent homebrew project, not Nintendo’s official release, a general emulator or the Wii U version of Wind Waker HD.

Its direction is GameCube → Switch. It is separate from nxnative and D2R Mobile, whose Apple-device workflows do not apply here. If your goal is Wind Waker on an iPhone, these Switch release packages are not that route.

Is there a downloadable release?

Yes. The reviewed v0.4.2 release was published on 17 October 2026 at 15:04:49 UTC, pinned to 084291f. It lists:

  • A USA Switch ZIP and its SHA-256 checksum file.
  • A Europe Switch ZIP and its SHA-256 checksum file.

These are region-specific project packages, not game-disc downloads. Their availability supersedes the README’s older “no release binaries” wording; compiling everything yourself is no longer the only documented starting point. Use the official project release page and the instructions for the same version, rather than an unrelated bundled download.

SwitchToAny reviewed release metadata, notes and documentation. We did not download or run either package, verify its file hash locally or test it on a Switch.

Hardware, homebrew and disc requirements

The v0.4.2 installation guide and runtime-assets documentation require:

  • An Atmosphère/homebrew-ready Switch.
  • Launching homebrew in title mode, as described by the project.
  • Your own lawfully prepared, uncompressed GameCube ISO matching the package region and revision.

The named inputs are USA GZLE01 revision 0 or Europe GZLP01 revision 0. A Wii U Wind Waker HD image is a different game build and is not the specified input. The published packages do not include the original disc data.

Choose one region per SD card. USA and Europe packages use the same installation path. Do not combine their files or assume switching region preserves a compatible installation. The project’s installation page is the authoritative sequence for preparing the runtime assets and launching the port.

What changed in v0.4.2?

The release includes three practical fixes:

  1. Sea-chart zoom: the correction merged earlier on 17 October is now in the release. A contributor report says sectors select their own islands, including the full sea chart.
  2. Switch depth of field: the depth-copy correction is now packaged. The source report describes distant scenery softening at Outset at noon, using the USA version in handheld mode.
  3. Optional network debug server: a rare crash affecting users who enabled that server is fixed, according to the release notes.

Earlier “next release” comments referred to the period before v0.4.2 shipped. They should not be read as evidence that these fixes are still source-only.

How playable is it?

The authors’ recorded manual coverage is limited, mainly the opening island and selected areas. It is useful early play evidence, not a complete-playthrough result. The same-version documentation still lists:

  • Missing disc videos.
  • Incomplete Instant text behavior in some cutscenes.
  • Docked 60 fps mode falling to 30 fps in heavy scenes.

The depth-of-field contributor measured 59.9 presents/s before and after in one Outset scene. That is a presentation count under a named condition, not a sustained all-game performance benchmark. Selecting a 60 fps option does not guarantee a continuous 60 fps session.

Updating an existing 0.4.x installation

The v0.4.2 release guidance says updates within 0.4.x retain the existing disc, saves, settings and HOME icon. Keep an independent backup before updating and follow the matching installation guide. This upstream statement is not a save-migration test by SwitchToAny or a guarantee for mixed-region files.

For a first installation, start by confirming the homebrew environment and exact disc region/revision. For an update, confirm your existing package’s region and preserve its data before changing files. If the missing-video or performance limits would spoil your intended playthrough, waiting for broader validation is a reasonable choice.

See our evidence method for how we separate release availability, contributor observations and tested-device claims.

A claim is only as useful as its scope.

These records distinguish source inspection, maintainer reports and community reports. We have not run the game or tested it on a device. Expand any record for its limits and original source.

Maintainer-reportedSwitchWaker v0.4.2 releases chart and depth fixesReleased at 15:04:49 UTC

v0.4.2 tags 084291f and releases sea-chart zoom, Switch depth of field and a rare crash with the optional debug server enabled. USA/Europe Switch ZIPs and checksum files are listed. The release says existing 0.4.x disc/saves/settings remain on update.

Limit: Release-note/metadata and same-version document review only; no package download or device/save test. Own matching revision-0 disc and title-mode homebrew requirements remain. Videos and some instant-text behavior remain incomplete; docked 60 fps can drop to 30 in heavy scenes. Not a full-play or save-migration guarantee.

Source inspectionSwitchWaker sea-chart zoom change on main10:55 historical checkpoint; next release pending

Main d3a19f4 merges the sea-chart sector zoom correction at 10:52 UTC. The contributor says each sector selects its own island, including Full sea chart, and explicitly says it will ship in the next release.

Limit: At the 10:55 checkpoint, the release remains v0.4.1. Source and contributor statement only; no SwitchToAny device, long-play or save test, and no new package recommendation.

Community-reportedSwitchWaker depth-of-field source correction14:49 historical checkpoint; not in v0.4.1

Fix 4451f9b, merged as 084291f at 14:49 UTC, corrects depth-copy conversion on Switch. The contributor reports softened distant scenery on USA/handheld at Outset at noon, with 59.9 presents/s before and after, and says it will ship in the next release.

Limit: At the 14:49 checkpoint, v0.4.1 packages remain unchanged. One scene’s presentation rate is not sustained gameplay performance, full-play or save validation. Duration and wider coverage are absent; no SwitchToAny device/package test.
